5 huge heel turns that can happen this year – superstar joins Roman Reigns, trouble in family
‘A heel turn can fix everything,’ is something that WWE fans say, albeit jokingly. To a certain degree, this has been proven true over the storied history of sports entertainment. While WWE always wants the babyfaces or the heroes to be cheered and liked by the fans, the blandness of their characters leads to the opposite happening.
Some of the biggest victims of this phenomenon have been icons like Hulk Hogan, John Cena and even Roman Reigns. While Reigns has been considered the top superstar in WWE since 2015, it wasn’t until he finally turned heel last year that a large part of the WWE Universe accepted him as their Tribal Chief.
In this article, we will take a look at 5 superstars who could rock the WWE by turning heel in 2021:
#5 Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre
It would be hard to argue with anyone who said that Drew McIntyre is the top babyface in WWE right now. The Scottish Warrior had the difficult task of carrying RAW on his back after winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36.
Despite having his crowning moment in front of no live audience, the Scot did not let that hamper his hard work. He did a great job as the WWE Champion up until he lost it for the second time at Elimination Chamber.
Though McIntyre had portrayed the character as an upstanding and brave babyface, it might lead to the fans turning on him eventually. To keep McIntyre fresh and prevent him from getting stale, there is a high chance that the 2-time WWE Champion could return to his ‘psychopath’ roots.
WWE could start a story where McIntyre loses to Lashley again at the WrestleMania Backlash PPV, sending the former NXT Champion into a spiral. Slowly McIntyre would start showing tendencies of his heelish side before an all-out heel turn.#4 Former WWE Champion John Cena

John Cena was the face of WWE for a very long time. Although Cena shot to fame during his early days as a heel character, he has remained a babyface for the majority of his career.
During his peak popularity, Cena received an equal number of cheers and jeers from the live crowd. Most of the adult male fanbase criticized Cena vehemently and accused him of being a company shill. Despite that, the multi-time WWE Champion continued to remain at the top of the WWE foodchain.
John Cena was last seen in WWE during the Firefly Funhouse match against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36. Interestingly, a rampant theory suggests that every superstar who comes in contact with Bray Wyatt’s Fiend personality reverts back to his old character.
We’ve seen this happen to many superstars such as Seth Rollins, The Miz and even Randy Orton. So, could John Cena become The Master of Thuganomics yet again when he returns to WWE?
The Firefly Fun House Match between @JohnCena & @WWEBrayWyatt may very well have been the most UNIQUE match in #WrestleMania history.

John Cena’s return to WWE could become much more interesting if he returns as a heel instead of the vanilla babyface character that he hasn’t broken for the past decade.#3 Former WWE NXT Champion Keith Lee

Keith Lee made a major impact on WWE RAW before he unceremoniously disappeared. Reports suggested that The Limitless One was set to become the next US Champion but had to miss the match. Instead, Riddle succeeded Bobby Lashley as the US Champion in WWE.
Lee has made some cryptic Twitter posts suggesting that he will be returning to WWE. It would be interesting if Keith Lee returns with a new persona altogether. A heel character would suit Lee as he has all the makings of a monster heel in WWE.
WWE Champion Bobby Lashley has stated that Lee is one superstar he would like to see join his faction on RAW. Though Lee’s upcoming return will be cheered by fans, there is a chance that much like Charlotte Flair, Keith Lee returns with a grudge against WWE and the fans.
I miss you guys, as well as all the others that expressed this sentiment… whether in dm’s, tweets, or comments. I miss you all.
But do not fret. I will fight like no other to return…and when I do, we got a LOT of ground to cover. 💜 #Leegion https://t.co/wqhjwu96tB— Hopeful Lee (@RealKeithLee) April 17, 2021
While joining The Hurt Business would be an option, Lee has a stronger chance of making it big if he becomes a dominant and unrelenting heel. A feud with a clear babyface like Riddle could help both men further their careers in WWE.#2 WWE Superstar Dominik Mysterio
EXCLUSIVE: The new mission for @reymysterio & @DomMysterio35 is to become the first father-son team to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Can they make it happen? pic.twitter.com/F7lCSHU7st— WWE Network (@WWENetwork) March 27, 2021
WWE legend Rey Mysterio has entertained fans for decades. While he is no longer part of the main-event picture, it looks like the Master of the 619 wants to get his son Dominik Mysterio over before he retires.
To his credit, Dominik Mysterio has proved to be a quick learner with many veterans and fans praising him for his commendable in-ring performances. While Dominik may be making strides as an athlete, he still has a long way to go as an individual character. The best way to achieve that would be for him to turn on his father Rey Mysterio.
In the world of pro-wrestling, we have often seen brothers turn on brothers and best friends beat each other up. But it is very rare for a son to go after his own father. By turning on Rey Mysterio, Dominik will become one of the most despised heels in WWE.

Rey Mysterio is often known as the ultimate babyface due to his likable underdog persona and connection with audiences.#1 Former WWE Women’s Champion Naomi
Naomi is a former 2-time Women’s Champion in WWE. However, her ‘glow’ has seemed to fade away of late with WWE not having anything important for her to do. Moved over to RAW, Naomi has been in a makeshift tag team with Lana. The two women have been unsuccessful in their attempt to win the Women’s Tag Team titles so far.
The former champion has been touted as the most athletic superstar in the women’s division today. An interesting way to make Naomi more relevant in WWE would be for her to join Roman Reigns’ stable on SmackDown.
Universal Champion Roman Reigns is flanked by Paul Heyman and Jey Uso. There have been reports suggesting that Jey’s brother and Naomi’s husband Jimmy Uso is ready for a return. Once Jimmy is back, both he and Naomi can accept Reigns as their Head of the Table and join his faction as he continues to dominate SmackDown.
Joining Reigns on SmackDown would help Naomi explore another side to herself with a darker and grittier character than she is used to portraying in WWE.
